The Garden City of Alaska

A century in bloom.

Nutrient-rich soil, temperate climate, moderate rain, and long summer days have given Skagway gorgeous gardens since the gold rush days. The wild frontier shifted to a settled life after the rush. The established town turned toward tourism and showed off the many gardens grown by residents. These yards were full of annual flowers for aesthetic pleasure as well as vegetables. In 1916 Skagway was given the nickname “Garden City of Alaska” to increase tourist appeal.

The corner of 7th & Broadway grows the small garden of the Alaska House restaurant. The cabbage, swiss char, rhubarb, nasturtiums, herbs, and more are cut daily as needed for use in mojitos, salads, and dinner specials.

Enjoy a stroll through our garden for free, or grab a coffee or beer to enjoy the day more. Please do not pick any flowers, fruit, herbs, or vegetables.
